Barbara Jean Ruff

Barbara Jean Ruff, 90, of Brookville, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 31, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on April 20, 1936, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Barbara lived a life defined by kindness, generosity, unwavering faith, compassion, dedication, and remarkable strength.

Barbara believed that life’s greatest purpose was to love and care for others. She devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family, always placing the needs of those she loved before her own. As the mother of children who faced unique challenges, she became a tireless caregiver, advocate, encourager, and source of unconditional love. She lovingly cared for her twin son, Jerome, throughout his life with extraordinary patience, grace, and steadfast devotion while also encouraging and supporting her eldest son, David, through his own challenges with the same unwavering compassion. She never viewed caring for her family as an obligation, but as one of God’s greatest blessings and the calling of her life.

That same generous spirit extended far beyond her home. Whether offering encouragement to a friend, volunteering through her church and community, or simply welcoming a stranger with a warm smile, Barbara made everyone feel valued, accepted, and loved. She had a rare gift for seeing the best in people and quietly reminding them of their worth.

Even in her final moments, Barbara demonstrated the dignity, grace, and quiet strength that defined her life. She remained a shining example of courage and character, leaving her family with memories that will be treasured forever.

Barbara shared more than 60 wonderful years of marriage with her beloved husband and soulmate, James Ruff. Married on Christmas Eve in 1952, they built a life centered on faith, friendship, family, and unconditional love. Their marriage was a beautiful testament to enduring commitment and unwavering devotion.

She is lovingly survived by her brother, Samuel Kurtz (Susie); her son, James Ruff (Tina); her son, Jerome Ruff; her daughter, Dawn Strain; her grandchildren, Jerry Strain (Crystal), Melaney Ballengee (Bryant), Danielle Zehnder (Adam), and Heather Ruff; her great-grandchildren, Devin Rosales, Rylee Jo Strain, Jeremiah Strain, Bryce Ballengee, and Jay Ballengee; along with many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Fern Kurtz; her devoted husband, James Ruff; her beloved sister, Tara Rogers; her eldest son, David Ruff; and her son-in-law, Gary Strain.

Affectionately known as “Barb,” she had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome, valued, and loved. She cultivated lifelong friendships through her church family, community organizations, hobbies, and social clubs. She took great pride in supporting the Trotwood bowling teams that won National Championships, welcoming fans at Dayton Dragons baseball games, serving as a score validator at the annual Dayton Trapshooting Tournament, and faithfully volunteering in numerous church ministries throughout her life.

Barbara found great joy in creating a beautiful home, traveling throughout the world, volunteering in her community, following sports, collecting and wearing her treasured jewelry, and expressing her creativity through fashion and home décor. She appreciated both life’s grand adventures and its simple pleasures, always finding beauty in each day and in every person she met.

Those who knew Barb will remember her infectious enthusiasm for life, warm smile, gentle heart, wonderful sense of humor, generous spirit, quiet wisdom, unwavering faith, and the genuine kindness she extended to everyone she met.

More than anything, Barbara will be remembered for the love she gave so freely. She measured success not by accomplishments or possessions, but by the lives she could nurture, encourage, and uplift. Her family was the center of her world, yet her compassion reached far beyond it, touching neighbors, friends, and strangers alike.

Barbara’s legacy is one of faith, selfless service, compassion, and unconditional love. She showed everyone around her that true greatness is found in serving others, loving without reservation, and finding joy in giving rather than receiving. Her life reminds us that true wealth is measured not by what we possess, but by the love we share, the kindness we extend, and the lives we touch. She never sought recognition for the life she lived; her reward was found in serving others, loving deeply, and reflecting God’s love in every life she touched. Though our hearts are broken by her passing, we find peace in knowing that her love continues through the family she cherished, the friends she inspired, and the countless lives made better simply because Barbara Ruff was part of them. Hers was truly a life well lived.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Barbara’s life on Saturday, August 22, 2026, with visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m., a Celebration of Life service at 3:00 p.m., and a reception immediately following.
