Obituary

Carl Anthon “Tony” Prater was born on July 4, 1942, a date that echoed the quiet pride, deep loyalty, and love for his country that defined his life. He was the beloved son of Maxine Prater and Weyman Prater, and grew up in Wilder, Tennessee, alongside his sister Sara and brother Dwyer.

Carl passed away peacefully in Dayton, Ohio, on March 17, 2026. It is poignant that his life began and ended near significant dates—bookends to a life truly worth celebrating.

Throughout his early years, Carl was an active student who embraced sports, particularly basketball, a passion that remained with him throughout his life. He was not only a devoted fan but also a dedicated coach and mentor, encouraging all those he cared about.

At the age of 21, Carl served his country with honor during the Korean War. Though he maintained a quiet discretion about his government work, his family admired the integrity and dedication he showed throughout his service. Afterward, Carl contributed his talents to Electronic Data Systems (EDS), continuing a life marked by commitment and steadfastness.

For 59 years, Carl shared a loving marriage with Linda Noreene Prater. Their union, celebrated at Otterbein Church among dear friends and family, was a testament to a profound bond that began with a memorable and cherished story at Rike’s Department Store in downtown Dayton—a moment when Carl famously swept Linda off her feet.

Together, Carl and Linda built a wonderful family. They were proud parents to two sons, Michael (married to Joy) and Scott (married to Mary). Carl was also a devoted grandfather to Jonathon (married to Park), Tony (married to Courtney), and Linda (partner Alex), as well as a cherished great-grandfather to Nola and Callaway.

Sports remained a joyful part of Carl’s life, whether through coaching or supporting his family’s athletic pursuits. He was an enthusiastic fan of Tiger Woods, The Ohio State Buckeyes, The Cincinnati Bengals, and more.

In quieter moments, Carl enjoyed simple pleasures such as fishing, paint-by-numbers, needlepoint, snacking, watching television, and following his beloved sports teams. These gentle pastimes reflected his steady and contented spirit.

Carl Anthon “Tony” Prater’s life was a celebration of loyalty, love, and dedication. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Carl is survived by his beloved wife Linda Prater, his two sons, Michael Prater and Scott Prater. His grandchildren Jonathon Prater, Tony Prater and Linda Prater. His great grandchildren Nola Prater and Callaway Prater. His sister Sara Gillen. His niece Victoria Nodine and two nephews Thomas Hall and Joseph Hall.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
