On Thursday, March 24, 2022, Charlayne “Charlie” Phillips, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend of every person she ever met, went home to be with her Lord and Savior at the age of 91. “Charlie” (as she was known by everyone) was born in Dayton, OH, on November 8, 1930, to Georgia and Glen Huggins, and she has lived in the area all her life. She attended Otterbein University in Westerville, OH, where she graduated in 1953 with her B.S. degree in teaching which she employed at Columbus Public School System as an elementary teacher. She met her husband of 63 years, Michael “Doc” Phillips at Otterbein, and they worked side by side to complete his medical school at Ohio State University in 1958. A few years later, they built the home in New Lebanon, OH, where they raised their family and welcomed countless guests over 52 years. If anyone could be said to have the gift of hospitality, it was Charlie. She was active in many charitable and religious organizations, being a devoted member of the Montgomery County Medical Society Alliance, The College Women’s Club, and the Gourmet Group North. She deeply cared for animals and was a regular donor to the Humane Society. She is preceded in death by her husband Michael, her sister Glendine, and her youngest son, Todd. She is survived by her two sons, Kent and Scott. She was loved by her five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and many extended family members and friends. A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dayton on Saturday, April 23rd, at 11 am. Reception to follow at 1 pm in the Conference Center of Brookhaven Retirement Community, 1 Country Lane, Brookville. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Humane Society.
