David Sword “Dave,” age 75, also known as “Papa Bear,” passed away on December 10, 2023. Born on
February 4th, 1948, to the late George W. and Miriam C. (Moosbrugger) Sword in Dayton, Ohio. David
was a 1966 graduate of John H. Patterson Cooperative High School, Pepsi Cola retiree, who loved classical music, baking, cooking, completing word puzzles, an avid Star Trek fan, UD Flyer basketball enthusiast, trap shooting, and the outdoors. David, often not a man of many words, strived very hard to lead by example and was a great mentor to many. His secondary family included the Boy Scouts of America, to which he recently commemorated his 50th anniversary. An avid boy scout from the time of his youth, to troop leader for Pack 161 in New Lebanon, later becoming a member in the Miami Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America; where he directed their Buckskin and Wood Badge Courses and many other initiatives which led to him earning the Silver Beaver Award for Distinguished Service to Youth, among many other accolades. Dave’s love, leadership, and support of both families have inspired many throughout his life. Loved and respected by many, his dry humor provided unanticipated smiles when it was needed the most. Dave is survived by his wife Jennifer (Heath) Sword, son Andrew Sword (fiancé Dianne Grabeman), granddaughters Megan Osborn (Kevin Jones) and Elizabeth Konicki (Austin Chaffee), grandson Devin Brombaugh (girlfriend Jasmyne Cruz), great grandboys Myles and Eli Chaffee, brother Don Sword (Donna), nephew Derek Sword, sister-in-law Jamie (Heath) Johnson, niece Erin Moore (Bob), great nephew Jackson Moore, nephew Ben Moore, brother-in-law Brett Heath (Kathy), and fur children Tubby and Indiana. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by brothers Dennis and Doug Sword, In-Laws James (Joanna) Heath, and daughter Nichole Sword. A visitation will be held on Friday, December 15, 2023 at Rogers Funeral Home (324 W. Main St. New Lebanon, OH 45345) with a service to immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Miami Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America (7285 Poe Ave. Dayton, Ohio 45414).
