MATHESON, Dorothy L. age 91 of Dayton, Ohio passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 18, 2021. Dottie, as she was known by many, was born in Campaign County Tennessee on February 16, 1930 to the late James & Phoebe (Talley) Sparkman and was the oldest of 6 children. Dottie is survived by her children, James (Nancy) Colon, Judith Swinning, Mark (Arlene) Colon, and Lisa Chaney. She is also survived by siblings, Charles and Ray Sparkman, and Beverly Hunborg; 13 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; 7 step-children and many step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John K. Matheson; and sons, Jerry Colon and Jewel “Bill” Colon. Dottie spent her childhood in Tennessee and then later in Hopkinsville Kentucky when the family relocated prior to World War II. It was during this time that she met and married her first husband George V. Colon. In 1958 she relocated to the Dayton area making Dayton home to raise their 6 children. She later married her second husband, John K. Matheson, in 1974 and they remained married until his death in 2015. Dottie made her living working in the public arena. She made many friends over the years and was loved and adored by everyone who knew her. She loved nothing more than being with and around people and always had a sweet smile on her face. Dottie’s favorite way of spending time was with her family and always looked forward for any reason to be together; whether it was for a holiday, a birthday, family vacation or just having a simple meal. She was a wonderful southern cook and looked for any reason to make one of her delicious recipes passed down through many generations. Dottie was a very spiritual person and was extremely devoted to her Catholic faith. Over the years she spent much of her time devoting herself to sponsoring many individuals going in to the Catholic Church. She is going to be deeply missed by her family, friends and all that knew her. In place of a Funeral Service, the family will hold a Celebration of Life for Dottie to be held this summer on Saturday, July 10, 2021, time and location to be determined.
