Gladys Marie (Finley) Marshall
Age 91 of Dayton, Ohio, formerly of Jackson, Kentucky, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at her home in Bedford, Texas.
She was born on March 4, 1933 in Elkatawa, Kentucky to Fred and Myrtle (Green) Finley. On October 4, 1952 Gladys married the love of her life, Andrew Marshall. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Andrew in 1991; son, Randy in 1996; 3 sisters, Nellie, Dorothy, and Fannie; and 2 brothers, Raymond and West.
Gladys leaves behind a son, Ron and his wife, Nancy Marshall of Edgewater, NJ; daughter, Shirley Sue and husband, Donald Procuniar of Grapevine, TX; 5 grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn and husband Jonathan Snyder, Katy Janet Marshall and husband, Andrew Kisch, Susannah Marie Marshall, Michael Andrew Procuniar, and Andrew Cole Marshall. Also, 5 great grandchildren, Logan Ridenour Snyder, Elwynn Rose Procuniar, Lilly Marie Snyder, Nora Louise Marshall, and Tess Hallie Procuniar; and sister, Dolly Watkins; brother, Earnest and wife, Gracie Finley of Michigan.
Gladys was a member of Bethany Church of Christ and was baptized on March 31, 2002. She enjoyed fellowship and serving the community. Gladys loved the holiday and enjoyed hosting the Secret Sisters Reveal party during December. She loved her family and friends and was always there to help when needed. She was always the first to volunteer for homeroom mom while the kids were attending Lincoln and Cleveland Elementary. She also enjoyed hosting holiday parties at the elementary and helping with field trips.
In the early 1970’s Gladys decided to take a part time job to earn a little extra money selling “Avon” and she became the neighborhood “Avon Lady.” She enjoyed getting out and meeting new people and would also greet her customers with “Avon calling.” Also, in the 1970’s Gladys & Shirley entered baked goods in to the Montgomery County Fair and that was when Gladys’ perfectionism came out. She would make batch after batch of candy until she was satisfied with the quality and felt it was deserving of a blue ribbon, of which she won many. Her grandmother taught her to make peanut butter candy in a cast iron skillet using only peanut butter, water and sugar, and had made this treat for the workers building the railroad through Jackson, Kentucky.
In the 1980’s while still selling Avon, Gladys decided to take on another part time job at Elder Beerman. Her husband always said she spent her entire check and then some on clothes and shoes that she needed for the job. Mom loved to shop, whether for herself or helping someone else. Another opportunity presented itself on day while in Kroger. There was a lady giving out samples and Gladys jumped at the opportunity to be able to cook, give out samples, have fun, and make other people happy. She was always happiest when doing and caring for others.
Gladys always loved to work out. She started in high school when playing basketball. She enjoyed water aerobics and jazzercise at the Lowry Center, then joined Curves and eventually joined a gym and worked out 3-4 times a week, often picking up a car load of friends to take with her.
