James Ray Greenfield. Beloved son of the late Charlotte (nee Forsthye) and Raymond Greenfield. Son-in-law to the late Harry and Joanne LaPorte. Husband to Rennia (LaPorte). Brother to Dorcye (Mark) Woosley, Janet (Hoyt) Painter, and Wesley. Loving father to Rachel (Tim), Leslie, and Daniel (Nicole). Dog-dad and dog-granddad to many, many pups.
Jim passed away at home among family on Saturday, September 20th, aged 66.
Jim was a man of traditional values and commitment: he loved his family; he loved the Lord. Jim also studied a variety of topics, from The Bible to The United States Constitution. He was equally serious about recreation, be it boating with his brother, his extensive array of fitness equipment, playing his guitars, or simply riding his recently acquired e-bike.
Jim was born on Sunday, December 14th, 1958, at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He was the youngest of four children born to Raymond and Charlotte Greenfield.
As youngsters, Jim and his brother Wes practiced that age-old tradition of newspaper delivery. For a short time, Jim’s future was uncertain following a car accident, but by God’s grace he pulled through.
Jim progressed through Lincoln Elementary School, continuing on to Trotwood High School. After high school graduation, Jim continued to learn, taking courses studying Architecture at Sinclair Community College. Following his studies, Jim enlisted in the US Marine Corps and spent time serving his country abroad. Jim closed his military career out after 4 years of service.
Upon exiting the military, Jim embarked on a lifelong career with the United States Postal Service. During his time at the Postal Service, Jim joined the union ranks and even led his local chapter. His work ethic was exemplary, with family noting that he only took one sick day in his entire career.
Outside of work, Jim focused his energy on the two things dearest to him: family (ferrying the kids to swim and hockey practice), and faith (attending First Church of God in Miamisburg). During these years, occasionally Jim would surprise the family with a bit of adventure: from a surprise horror movie for Daniel or indulging the kids in a Super Soaker fight that may have even happened inside the house.
When he finally bid his working days at the Postal Service goodbye, Jim did not lose pace in his retirement years. Jim’s retirement was filled with an assortment of hobbies: buying a new fishing boat; amassing his own personal gym; getting a massive vegetable garden underway each year; teaching himself guitar; and canvassing for political causes.
Jim was a strong personality, a tireless worker, selfless when it came to his family, and steadfast in his faith. To the last moment, Jim was adamant about living on his terms, even saying he was ready to set out on his e-bike for another adventure.
