In Loving Memory of Ronald Van Meter Sr.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ron, affectionately known as “Sonny” to his friends and family at age 85. Born on August 12, 1938, in Dayton, Ohio, to his parents, Russell and Welcome Van Meter, Ron's journey through life was marked by his remarkable spirit and enduring love for his family and friends.
A proud graduate of Wilbur Wright High School, Ron's athletic spirit shone brightly in his youth, where he excelled in both baseball and basketball during the 1950s.
Following his high school years, Ron's sense of duty and patriotism led him to serve his country as a U.S. Marine. Stationed at Camp Pendleton, he served from 1957 to 1959, embodying the values of discipline and commitment that would define his life.
After his honorable service, Ron ventured into entrepreneurship, owning his own grocery store and restaurant, showcasing his spirit of independence and drive. His work ethic continued to be evident as he joined Continental Baking, dedicating 20 years and earning accolades, including two trips to Hawaii for outstanding sales achievements.
Ron's love for travel was a significant aspect of his life. Alongside his beloved wife, they became snowbirds, savoring winters in Florida. Many cherished moments were spent on their pontoon boat, fishing and basking in the serene waters. Their adventurous spirit also took them north to Canada during summers, embracing the joy of fishing and relaxation.
An avid golfer, Ron cherished his time on the green. He was a passionate sports fan, often found coaching from the stands during his daughter's high school sports events.
Despite facing multiple health challenges, Ron's faith remained unshakable, his sense of humor intact, and his ability to make others smile, unwavering. His relentless positivity and enduring sense of humor, a reflection of his kind-hearted and humble nature, always brightened the lives of those around him.
Ron, a true embodiment of love, kindness, and humor, leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Though his physical presence is missed, his spirit endures through the countless cherished memories and moments shared. His memory, rich with resilience, joy, and unconditional love, stands as a guiding light, continuing to inspire and uplift us all.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Welcome Van Meter, his sisters Beverly Russell and Joyce Dodge, and grandson Michael James Van Meter. He leaves behind a legacy of love and joy, survived by his wife of 64 happy years, Melvina Van Meter; his children Jon (Rachel) Van Meter, Ron (Teresa) Van Meter, and Kimberly (Matthew) Muscente; along with 10 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of family members and friends.
